Gnome progress?

several months ago (maybe bordering on half a year) there was an effort to
make Dates and Contacts more functional with a better interface on the Gnome
desktop. Are these improvements going to be picked back up? The recent work
on N810 is great and i wish i could see the results personally, but the
Gnome desktop niche is still wide open for a lightweight, integrated
Calendar and Contacts program. Evolution for the most part is overkill for
the average home user.

Most of the recent work on Contacts and Dates has been on the openmoko
rewrites, which will at some point be ported back to GNOME.

That said, if there is anything in particular you are missing
integration wise, please file bugs so we know what you want.

from what i've read, many of the improvements i was thinking of have been
worked on for the openmoko releases. for example: google calendar sync and
more complete event creation (including repeats, reminders).

Not sure about inclusion of invites to events which would integrate with
contacts and send reminders. If you could point me to an up-to-date feature
list, I'd be glad to file feature requests/bugs.

look forward to the backport...

The new Dates back-end can do everything the old one can, except
drag-and-drop (for the moment). Additionally, it supports recurrences,
alarms (although this is unimplemented, the API is there) and has a
reasonable abstraction of the underlying ecal query interface, allowing
for easy implementation of complex queries. It's a matter of opinion,
but I also think the UI widgets are much nicer too :)

Google Calendar synchronisation is really more to do with eds (and a
separate application) than Dates, but latest eds has a Google Calendar
back-end, I think, so that should be sorted in the near-ish future.

Patches / code / feature-requests welcome.

wouldn't Dates be in a position to initiate that synchronization between
Google and eds on opening? or does that work in the background?

on another note... with all of the work OpenedHand puts into Clutter, I
always thought it would be put to use in these programs to give a slick UI.
