Discussion:
Timezone not recognized on Maemo (Nokia N810)?

Hi,

I would like to use the combination of Evolution on my desktop and the
pimlico-suite on my Nokia N810, because the synchronisation via
evolutionsync and scheduleworld runs fine.

There is one (for me serious) problem left.

My calendar on the Desktop uses UTC-notification for most of the dates like:
DTSTART:20080423T093000Z
DTEND:20080423T110000Z

Some come from other Calendar-Software or via sync with scheduleworld
and use an explicit timzone-statement like:
DTSTART;TZID=/softwarestudio.org/Tzfile/Europe/Berlin:20080331T133000
DTEND;TZID=/softwarestudio.org/Tzfile/Europe/Berlin:20080331T154500

On the desktop (Ubuntu 7.10) in Evolution AND in the ubuntu-port of the
pimlico-suite the dates show up correctly.

On the Nokia N810 all dates show up two hours to early, but if I click
on the single event, the correct time is shown. It just seems to be
displayed wrong.

The timezone on the N810 is set up correctly to the same value as on the
desktop (Europe/Berlin) and other programms like gpe-calendar seem to
read the information correctly.

When I start dates via the command-line there is an error-message saying:
dates[7084]: GLIB WARNING ** default - Error retrieving local time zone

As I said /etc/localtime is there and points to a valid entry in
/usr/share/zoneinfo/Europe/Berlin and /etc/timezone and I even created
/etc/TIMEZONE.

Any ideas or anything I could contribute to solve this issue?

Thanks in advance

Hi,

Dates reads the gconf key that Evolution sets for the timezone, located
at /apps/evolution/calendar/display/timezone and has no other fallbacks.
The new Dates backend used in openmoko-dates2 has much more robust
timezone detection and support in general, so this will be fixed when
this is ported to hildon/desktop.

A temporary fix would be to set this gconf key from the command-line
with 'gconftool-2 -s /apps/evolution/calendar/display/timezone --type
string "Europe/Berlin"', but I can't guarantee that the display will be
correct (if it's correct on the desktop though, then it should be the
same on the tablet).

Sorry for the inconvenience, hopefully they'll be some time to write
that port in the not-so-far future :)

Thanks for the explanation - that explains the warning-message.

Sounds promising.

Yes, that helps. Thanks a lot. May be there should be a hint on the
website, because that really makes the pimlico-suite together with
evolutionsync to the only working synchronisation solution for Maemo.

Nothing to apologise for - I am a big fan open-source and happy about
every contribution to it.

Tanks a lot
